Sorting magnets for collection yards

What are sorting magnets used for in recycling centers?

Inspection and sorting magnets play an irreplaceable role in waste sorting. They are used to check for the presence of magnetic material, which is then sorted out of the sorting line in recycling centers or by hand.

They are equipped with very strong magnets for efficient collection of ferromagnetic waste.

Examples of use

- Inspection of compressed material - Before compressed material is sent to large smelters for further processing, it must not contain any magnetic objects. Sorting magnets are used to detect the presence of magnetic material simply by swirling. As soon as you feel resistance, there is a magnetic object nearby.

- Identifying metal in plasterboard partitions.

- - Collecting magnetic objects from the ground.

What ferromagnetic materials are there?

The essence of permanent magnets is to attract ferromagnetic elements to each other. Ferromagnetism is the strongest form of magnetism. Using this phenomenon, the material exhibits spontaneous magnetization. Ferromagnetic substances can be magnetized permanently.

These ferromagnetic elements that are attracted by magnets include:

  • Cobalt (Cp)
  • Nickel (Ni)
  • Gadolinium (Gd)
  • Steel and other alloys
  • Iron (Fe)

Which substances are not attracted by magnets (are not magnetic):

  • Brass
  • Copper
  • Gold
  • Silver

Which magnets are among the strongest?

Neodymium magnets

Neodymium magnets can be considered the strongest magnets in existence. Even the smallest neodymium magnets can lift up to a thousand times their own weight. They are made of a mixture of neodymium, iron, and boron and have a corrosion-resistant coating. Neodymium magnets are manufactured by cutting.

Their surface is usually coated with a combination of nickel, zinc, gold, and resin to prevent corrosion. They can therefore also be used to identify materials in various types of dry and liquid mixtures.

When handling neodymium magnets, it is important to remember that they can be used at temperatures up to 80°C, otherwise they lose their magnetic properties.

Samarium-cobalt magnets

Samarium magnets play an irreplaceable role in the category of super-strong magnets. They have almost the same strength as neodymium magnets. They are made of a mixture of samarium (Sm) and cobalt (Co).

In addition to their high strength, their main advantage is their temperature resistance (up to 300°C). They can therefore be used in environments where extremely high temperatures are present. Another advantage is their natural resistance to corrosion – they are sold without surface treatment.

Types of sorting magnets

Cone sorting magnets

These are cone-shaped magnets attached to a brass chain, which can be clipped to clothing with a carabiner to prevent the magnet from being lost. Cone sorting magnets on a chain can be used to check whether ferromagnetic material is present in the tested area. Thanks to their favorable price, they are among the cheaper sorting magnets used in hard-to-reach areas.

Pendulum cone sorting magnets

These magnets are equipped with very strong neodymium magnets and are part of a rod of sufficient length to check for the presence of magnetic objects and pull various metal magnetic objects out of hard-to-reach places (e.g., a car engine).

Super-strong sorting magnets with neodymium magnets

Neodymium sorting magnets are used to identify ferromagnetic material among non-magnetic material. They can be placed above a sorting line or used for manual testing. They have high magnetic force, which allows them to effectively capture magnetic objects without further manual sorting.

Super-strong sorting magnets with samarium magnets

These super-strong sorting magnets are equipped with powerful samarium magnets and, similar to neodymium magnets, allow you to identify various ferromagnetic objects in a mixture of common non-magnetic materials. They also have a higher temperature resistance of up to 300 °C and excellent corrosion resistance. They can also be used in water and liquid mixtures without fear of damage.

UP super-strong sorting magnets

This UP sorting magnet is the latest type in the category of super-strong sorting magnets for collection yards. Its advantage is its convenient handling thanks to its ergonomic handle. It thoroughly helps to sort and identify magnetic material among non-magnetic objects. You can buy it here: https://magnetickeseparatory.cz/supersilny-tridici-magnet-up/
